Yesterday afternoon the committee of the Lyttelton Red Cross Sewing Guild met in the Borough Council Chambers Under the presidency of the Mayoress (Mrs W. T. Lester) for the purpose of caving farewell to Mrs J. G. Beswiek, who, with her husband, late postmaster at Lyttelton, is leaving the port for Tauranga at the end of the month. On Tuesday evening a bright and lappy gathering of girls met at the Y.W.C.A. building in Latimer Square for, a social time. The girls represented the "cafetaria contingent," by which is meant the large number of girls who have become members since the cafetaria and rest room in High Street were opened, and whose experience of the association is confined principally to that portion of it. The institution, however, wants them to share in all it lias to offer, and so arranged a party for them in the Latimer Square hostel, Mrs A. Kaye (president) and Mrs Callender acting as hostesses. The rooms looked very cosy and inviting with their pretty furnishings and bright fires, and the large number'of girls who attended had a jolly time over games, chatter, Biippcr, and song. During the evening Mrs Kaye made a brief speech, welcoming them to the association, and express, ing her pleasure at, the fact that the now rooms especially had become =o useful to them. She mentioned that ?t liad been found necessary to increase the price of tea, coffee, and cocoa supplied, owing to the increased cost of those commodities, but reminded the girls that by purchasing the coupons (10 at a time) the cost was very greatly reduced. The evening was brought to ;1 close with the association hymn and the benediction.
