APPEALS FROM THE BALLOT. SECOND BOARD'S -SITTING. A sitting of the Second Canterbury Military Service Board was held in Christchurch this morning. Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., presided, and with him were Messrs. M. G. Rich and F. T. Eldridge. Major K. M. Gresson appeared as military representative. Walter Henry Alexandre, farmer, Marshland, said he was producing milk, wheat. etc., and could not secure labour to run the farm. He had two brothers, hut none was serving; one had had his appeal adjourned sine die, and the other was a married man with four children, 'the appeal was adjourned to June 28, when the case of appellant's brother will be reviewed.

An appeal was made by James Fleming, Ltd.. incrclianls and importers. High Street, on behalf of Maurice Cuthbcrt Cooper, of Go Garden Road, Fendalton, manager and ! director of the company. It was stated that nine-tenths of the company's capital is owned by Mrs Kate Fleming, widow, of Christchurch, and is her sole means of livelihood. Cooper had been medically classified. CI; he was previously C2. The employee next In rank to him was In Japan, on important business for the firm, but was expected to return in October. The appeal was adjourned sine die, on the understanding that it will be reviewed when the man now In Japan returns. The Richmond School Committee appealed on behalf of John Bowden, second assistant in the school, on the ground that the .stafi had already been reduced considerably, and no capable relief was available. There were OS':) pupils on the roll, 338 being boys. The board took into account the fact that the reservist has been classed CI, and intimated that it would not interfere with the school on the off-chance of his being made lit. The appeal was adjourned sine die. Family reasons were pleaded by George Horace Baldwin, carpenter and joiner, 77 Mace Road, Bromley, a CI man. The appeal was dismissed.

The Canterbury Frozen Meat Co., Ltd., appealed on behalf of Herbert George Bright, foreman preserver at the company's Belfast works, on the ground that he is an essential worker in an essential industry. The plant at Belfast also did preserving for two other works. A sine die adjournment was granted. His occupation, as affecting the public interest, was the ground of the appeal, of Ronald Anderson Black, wharf labourer,' 23 Cranley Street, Bromley. The appeal was supported by the Lyttelton Waterside Workers' Union. Black had been a waterside worker at Lyttelton since 1913. He was not an expert winchman or bullrope man. The appeal was dismissed. Time until September 9 was allowed to John Fay, farm labourer, 464 Barbadoes Street, on the application of his employer, Bernard Tully, farmer, Ohoka. The following reservists, who had been drawn in the wrong ballot, had their appeals allowed, and were transferred to their right classes:—Thomas Valentine Grimley, gardener, Jubilee Street, Woolston; Thomas K. Hickenbotham, company secretary, 25 Nelson Street, New Brighton; George L. Miliar, farm labourer, Prcbbleton; Francis R, Smith, labourer, 9 Melrose Street, all Class C; and John Henry O'Callaghan, mechanic, 152 Antigua Street, and John Wilson, hawker, 55 Bcresford Street, both Class D.

The appellants being over military age, the appeals of the following were allowed:

--.Tunics O'Donnell, ordermau, 32 Leeds Street; Patrick E, Program, labourer, 15 Bunyan Street; Frederick Charles Townsend, gardener, 30 Conway Street; Adam John Wendt, carpenter, Bower Bridge, New Brighton; and Thomas L. Wilson, storekeeper, 20 Cooper's Road, Shirley. For lack of appearance, the appeals of Percy George Barraball, freezing works employee, Marshland, and John William Sheehan, timber stacker, 109 Hawdon Street, were dismissed.
