ASHBURTON.

NOTES AND NEWS. Trom Our Own Correspondent. The Theatre Eoyal was crowded to the doors last night, when the Rev. Howard Elliott addressed those present upon the aims and objects of the Protestant Political Association. Mr Nosworthy, M.P., presided. A meeting of the Y Branch of the W.C.T.U. was held in St. Andrew's Hall on Monday night, Sister Jessie presiding. Mrs Napier (England) addressed the meeting, giving an outline of the work and aims of the union. Special mention was made of Misses Oakley and L. Jary, who had been successful in securing 21 new members, 13 of whom were secured by Miss Oakley, who was awarded the "Star of Honour." Mrs Napier initiated 10 of the new members who were present. Five fresh cases of scarlet fever were reported to the Hospital Board on Monday, two at Allenton, one at Hinds, one at Eiffeltou, and one at Dromore. A reservist who is to go into camp at an early date made an application to the Financial Assistance Board over a month ago. Later a second letter was sent, reminding the board of his position, but up to the present he has not received any acknowledgment. The matter is to be dealt with by the Second Division Executive at a meeting this week. As no tender has been received by the County Council for the lease of the Aidiburton Saleyards, the matter will be referred to the council at its next meeting.
