Mr J. Wilson, jun., of Mile Eoad, Avonside, is shortly proceeding to England to join the Eoyal Flying Corps. The Hon. J. A. Hanan, Minister of Education, has had to cancel his proposed visit to the South Island owing to being indisposed. The Victoria League Conference this I morning passed a resolution of deep sympathy with Mr and Mrs Hallain, of Wellington, in the loss of their only son, recently killed in action. The Eev. A. C. Lawry, of Rugby Street, returned yesterday by the express from Dunedin, where he had remained a few days after the closing session of the Methodist Conference. Mr C. E. Archibald, secretary of the Otago Land Board and Receiver of Land Eevenue for the Otago district, has been appointed to a position in the head office of the Public Trustee in Wellington. Mr N. M. Eichmond, of Christchurch, who is at present in camp, has been advised that he had passed his final examination for the B.A. degree, and has secured a senior University scholarship in applied mathematics. Mr .1. Sead-Gowing has been advised from London that his brother, Mr J. J. Warden-Gowing, has been awarded the Order of the British Empire in recognition of his services in connection with the London munitions tribunal. Mr Walter Martin, for many years clerk of the Magistrate’s Court at Christchurch and now on the civil staff of the Administrator of Samoa, is at present in Christchurch on sick leave, and will undergo an operation shortly. Miss Mavis Ashman, a former pupil of the Girls’ High School, has received notice from the Eegistrar of the New Zealand University that she has qualified for matriculation. She was previously credited with a partial pass only. Mr Hunter, rector of the Gore High School, accompanied by Messrs D. Gilchrist, J. Mac Gibbon, and J. Blackie, members of the Board of Governors, left Gore yesterday on a visit to the secondary schools of Otago and Canterbury with the object of inspecting and reporting on agricultural experimental plots and school hostels. They expect to visit Lincoln College to-morrow. On Monday evening last, at Selwyn, a farewell social was tendered Mr and Mrs W. Turner, who are leaving the district. Until recently Mr Turner has been stationmaster at Selwyn. He has now been transferred to the relief staff, Christchurch district. During the evening Mr H. F. Wright, on behalf of the residents, presented the guests with two handsome easy chairs. Songs and recitations were given by Messrs H. F. Wright, A. Amor, E. Claydon, J. Curtin, W. Turner, and W. Washbourne. Mr J. Curtin succeeds Mr Turner as stationmaster.
