WOOLSTON BY-ELECTION.

A LARGE POLL. An election to fill the vacancy on the Woolstou Borough Council, caused by the death of the late Or W. J. Trerise, was held yesterday. There were two candidates for the seat, Mr D. Rowse and Mr C. Hill, the latter being the nominee of the Woolston Social-Demo-cratic Party. The voting was as follows : D. Rowse 372 Chaa. Hill' 183 Informal 5 Majority for Rowse .. 189 The total number of voters going to the poll, 560, is considered a very good one for a borough council by-election, and indicates that considerable interest was taken in the contest. Mr Hill was the Labour candidate for the Mayoralty at the last general municipal elections. He was previously a member of the Woolston Council, and was recently elected a member of the Drainage Board. Mr Rowse, the successful candidate, has not had previous municipal experience. Addressing those present after the declaration of the poll, Mr Rowse returned thanks for his election. The feeling of the electors and people of the borough was loyal to the Empire in this great crisis. The electors were strongly patriotic, and would support the Empire till the end of the war. He was a Britisher, and was proud to be one. He would as a councillor devote himself to municipal matters, and would give short shrift to political and other controversies.
