MUSICAL SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Christchurch Musical Society was held in the Durham Street Schoolroom last evening, Mv J. A. Flcsher presiding over a good attendance of members. The annual report stated that three ordinary concerts and one special benefit concert had been held during the year. The financial position, though much improved, was still a matter of some concern. The total income last year was £.'186 13/10, and the expenditure £331 14/2. The total liabilities at the end of the year amounted to £lB5 0/1, since reduced to £139 4/1. When outstanding subscriptions were got in the total liabilities should not exceed £llO. The membership comprises 141 subscribers and 9G performers. A campaign had been instituted which it was hoped would result in bringing the number of subscribers up to 200. The president, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, said that all circumstances considered the position was satisfactory, and should the campaign for members be successful the society would be in a good position. A similar effort to the. benefit concert, which had realised £l3l 18/1, would put the society on its feet. The pr esident said that the absence of a large hall in Christchurch and the multiplicity of societies made it difficult for any cue society to progress. Perhaps something might be done in the future in the matter of amalgamation. The speaker thought that the Society should not. live so much unto itself, but do more for patriotic purposes or in small works of mercy, such as visiting hospitals and cheering the sufferers there.

Miss Shirtcliffe said that through the efforts of those taking part in the membership campaign the season would commence with close on 200 members.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted.
