The Grey Rabbit

There once was a rabbit with silver fur, Her little grey neighbours looked at her &hj Till she said, with pride, in the sunlit wood: W| "The reason I'm white is because I'm good." yj "Oh! what shall I do?" said a tiny mole, yl "A fairy has tumbled into a hole; «§ It's full of water and crawly things; jf And she can't get out, for she's hurt her wings. e "I did my best to catch hold of her hair; ifet£] But my arms are too short, and she's still in there. !k§s Oh, darling white rabbit, you're arms are long, ere* You say you're good—l know you're strong." Sj£i "Don't tell me about it," the rabbit said; jf|eiP She shut up her eyes, her ears grew red. I Msj "There's lots of mud, and it's sure to stick, \§ Because my fur is so long and thick.'' *J "There's plenty of water," the wee mole cried; fk ' ' There are shining rivers from moorland wide, m Dew from the sky, the dear grey rain, WS And the fairies to kiss you white again.'' U \ "Oh, dear, oh, dear!" sobbed the tiny mole, "Who will help the fairy out of the hole?" A common grey rabbit popped out of the gorse: -^ "I'm not very strong, but I'll try, of course." /R% His little tail bobbed as he waded in; UKp The muddy water came up to his chin; PM But he caught the fairy tight by the hand, t\ & And sent her off safely to fairy land. jyA But she kissed him first on his muddy nose, %V\ She kissed his feet, and his little wet toes. «M' And when day dawned in the early light yM The little grey rabbit was shining white. m —L.R., in the "JST.S.W.
