RICCARTON RAILWAY CROSSING.
To the Editor of THE SUN. Sir, —Cannot something he done to improve the methods • of the railway signalling at the Kiccaitou railway erofising. On Sunday last, the train leaving the Square at 5 p.m. was stopped on the city side of the crossing, the conductor had to get, out,- go several chains to get a ladder, then mount the, signalling post, turn on tin' gas. and' light the lamp. Then lie had to put the much-needed ladder on the, train ear, transport it over the railway, an 1 repeat, his previous lamp-lighting work at the next, signalling post, and returned the ladder, the process occupying fully ID minutes. Meanwhile the electric light mains, from which a very simple act could draw power, were'running above the very signals themselves. It seemed to me ridiculous that a car load of passengers, conductor’s valuable time, and the useless labour involved should be so wasted, when the mere turning of a switch would have obviated all discomfort, loss, ami danger.—l am, etc., I'ASSIdNCMR. Riecartou, November I.
