SPREYDON BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. A meeting of the Spreydon Borough Council was held last evening, when Hi ere were present: The Mayor (Air W. IT. Winsor), and Crs D. "Williamson, E. IT. Clarke, W. R. Galuigan, .(. P. Dinck, 8. If. Rudd, and A. Manhire. Cr W. J. Elliott wrote tendering his resignation from the council, on account of receiving a transfer to Lyttelton. The resignation was accepted with regret. The Works Committee reported that the matter of ihe storage of dangerous goods had been referred to a small subcommittee. The City Council's Strickland Street account had been referred to the Borough Council's solicitor. The City Council also wtoto to the effect (hat it considered the flooding of Colombo Street was due to the culverts. The committee decided to reply that flooding took place before the culverts were there, and suggesting that the water from the city side of Strickland Street be. taken across Colombo Street, at the junction of such streets. The report was adopted. * The Electric Light Committee reported that the current had been finally taken over from the Public Works Department, through the City Council. The engineer had reported that the Lincoln Road mains were well in hand, and were expected to be ready in about a week's time. The com'mittee recommended that the minimum rate of 5/be charged for combined lighting and heating. The report was adopted. A letter was read from Mr 11. (!. Ell, asking if the council could set aside a grant towards the Summit Road when considering the estimates. The Jotter was received. The Canal League wrole asking for a donation towards the league's fund. The Mayor moved that a donation of, £5 be given. Cr Clarke seconded the motion. Cr Dinck moved, as an amendment,! that the letter be received. The amendment war; not seconded, ami the motion was carried. Mr E. Cuthbert, engineer to the Brainage Board, wrote forwarding an estimate of the cost of a complete system of sewerage for the borough, in reply to the council's re.'juest. The total cost] would be £92,000, with an annual charge of -CGfiSO. Mr Cuthbert added; that were it within his power lo provide a system for Spreydon without reference to anyone, he should be inclined to provide a sewage farm in the soul hern portion of the borough, which would serve Spreydon, Riccarton. and Fendniton. Tliat would considerably diminish tin" cost. It was decided to reply to the effect that Ihe cost was beyond ihe resources of the borough at present, and the idea! of a sewage farm would never lie enter-j t;i itied by Spreydon. The Chrtstchureli City Council wrote; stating that several complaints had i been received regarding the dangerous position of the bridge over the rleathcote River at Colombo Street South, owing to the bridge being considerably narrower limn the street. The cost oft widening the bridge to the full would lie S.'iOO, and the council was asked if :.t would pay one-quarter of the cost. The Mayor said that he had noticed that the City Council had stated that Spreydon was willing to pay a fourth I of the cost. He thought that was rather high-handed. It did not matter to Spreydon whether the bridge existed. lie thought that one-fourth of the cost i was too much for Spreydon. Ir was decided to offer'to [<:iy £SO to-1 wards the work.
