PATRIOTIC FUND.

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. A meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Patriotic Fund was held this afternoon, the Mayor (Mr H. Holland) presiding. Prior to the commencement of the business the Mayor referred to the death of Mr A. H. Turnbull, and on his motion Ihe following resolution was carried:—"That this executive desires to convey to the relatives of the late Mr A. 11. Turnbull its sincere and profound sympathy in their recent sad bereavement, and at the same lime wishes to record ils sincere appreciation of the untiring energy and zeal which he displayed in his capacity as a member of this executive, and especially in the responsible positions of chairman of the Agricultural and Farming Committee and deputy-chairman of the Applications Committee, for the benefit of soldiers and their dependents." As a mark of respect to the memory of Mr Turnbull the meeting adjourned for live minutes. SUPPLEMENTARY FISSIONS. Recommendations were made by the Applications Committee relative to supplementary pensions and grants to be made by the fund to dependants of men killed in action ov who have died whilst serving as members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces or allied services. The committee explained that it was not intended that the scheduled ratcs_ set out in its report should be applied i:i every instance, but that each case should be dealt with strictly on its merits, the schedule merely defining the maximum grants for the guidance of the committee. The recommendations were as follow:- - Ordinary Scale.—That a scale be adopted for the widows and children of men coming within the objects of the Canterbury Patriotic Fund -rules and regulations. That the Patriotic Fund may grant relief so as to bring the income of a widow with children up to the following amounts in such cases where the husband's salary did not, prior to enlistment, exceed the sum of £2oo:

Extended Scale.—That the fund may grant in cases where the income of the husband prior to enlistment exceeded £2OO, an amount which will bring the total income of the dependant or dependants up to the following scale:—

Orphans.—That the fund be authorised to pay up to 5/- per head to supplement pensions in eases where children have lost both parents, or where in the opinion of Hie committee children are not under proper control and the board makes such arrangement for their upbringing as may seem best. Dependants.—Any member of a family who was wholly or partially dependent on the soldier's earnings prior to his enlistment. Widows.—Supplementary pensions payable to a widow may either con- | linuc or cease on her marriage as the committee directs, but the committee may grant a gratuity not exceeding two years' pension which ; may be paid in a lump sum or by instalments. Female Dependants.—A supplejmenlary pension payable to any I other female dependant shall cease |oil her marriage, but the pensions payable may be transferred in whole ior part to the children at the discrej lion of the executive. Reported Missing.—Supplementary pensions may be payable in the same J manner as though member hud died I of wounds. Pensions to parents in Special jdascs.—The committee may at any lliine grant a supplementary pension of such amount as it thinks (it to the lather or mother of a member of the forces if the committee is satisfied that the applicant for a pension hits not adequate means of support. Where an application for a supplementary pension in respect of the death or disablement of a member of the forces is made by the widowed mother of such member, and such member was her sole support, the supplementary pension granted to the applicant shall not in any ease be less than would have been granted if the applicant was the wife of the , member in respect of whose death or ' disablement the application is made. ' Pensions to Persons other than Dependants.—lf any person has suffered material loss of income or property by reason of the deafh or dis- ' ablemenl of a member of the forces, and has not adequate means of sup--1 port a supplementary pension may be granted by the committee.
