KAIAPOI.
The Kaiapoi District High School Committee met last evening, there being present Messrs Yellowlees (chairman), Bryden, Cooper, Pavitt, Clarke, Trustrcm, McGregor, and Dunn. The headmaster's report gave the roll as follows:—Primary, 21!) boys, 202 girls, total, 421; Secondary, 12 boys, 9 girls, total, 21. Average attendance: Primary, 105 (boys), 182 (girls), total, 377; Secondary, VI (boys), 8 (girls), total, 20. The Education Board wrote that" arrangements were being made for a supply of shingle for tlio school "flys," and that the Board's architect had been instructed to report re the repairs asked for to the school walls and fence. The chairman reported that he had made inquiries re the constant changing of the school books, and he had been informed that the inspectors were responsible. A discussion took place re reverting to the use of slates in place of paper for school work, and Mr Cooper moved: "That this committee suggest to the Education Board that, during the continuance of the war, children be allowed to use slates for all school work (with the exception of home-work), instead of paper." Mr Cooper said that there hail been two rises of Id. and IJd- per pound iu the price of paper since March 1, and there was no knowing where it would stop. The motion was carried unanimously.
