, ■ —p BOROUGH COUNCIL. From Our Own Correspondent. The Borough Council met last ] evening, the Mayor presiding. ' A. Cooper, picture show manager, asked for permission to screen suitable subjects on Good Friday.— Permission was refused. The County Council wrote stating its intention to subsidise 10/- in the | £ on all subscriptions received for the Red Cross, the amount in any one month not to exceed £250. Cr Buchanan said the present council's term of oflice was almost over. He suggested that the matter be left in abeyance until the new council was elected. This was agreed 10. Cr Buchanan outlined at some length the draft of the agreement between the Electric Supply Company and the council, with regard to the taking over of the company by the council. It was decided lo approve of the agreement. It was pointed out that the County Council and the A. and P. Association had lodged objections against the inclusion in the borough of their respective reserves in Netherby. Cr Buchanan stated that a commissioner would visit Ashburton at an early date, and finally decide the question. The abattoirs manager (Mr T. J. Buckton) reported that during February 74 cattle, 760 sheep, 1!) pigs, and two calves were slaugbtered. NEWS AND NOTES. At the council meeting last evening the* foreman of works (Mr J. Black- . ler) reported that the experiment of ! laying asphalt in East Street would \ be commenced on Friday. The ex- , periment will be watched with great ; interest by the Ashburton public. An inquest was held on Sunday i concerning the death of Helen Skilling, a married woman, aged 73, residing at Riverside, Ashburton. Mr G. W. Andrews, J.P., presided. A verdict was returned that death was due to heart failure. i
