■ •- ANNUAL CONFERENCE. Press Association. DUNEDIN, March 12. The annual conference of the United Fire Brigades' Association was opened at Balclutha to-day. The report stated that the excess of assets over liabilities was £392 14/7, against £576 10/4, last year. The membership now totalled 135 brigades. The conference decided to appoint a | deputation to wait ou the Minister of '■ Internal Affairs urging that further I efforts be made to obtain financial as- \ sistance from the insurance companies i towards the upkeep of all brigades,: whether under Fire Boards or not. i It was decided to bring before the j Efficiency Board the question of assist-! ing the Government in the enlistment! of eligible members without unduly I weakening the strength of the brigades, j A motion was carried disapproving of i any brigade superintendent appealing i for the exemption of any member who! ; was eligible for active service.
