GAS PRICES.

» „., i ■■■■ —■—■ INCEEASE AT LYTfELTON. A recommendation for an increase in the price of gas to consumers was submitted at last evening's meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council in a report by the Lighting Committee. The report stated that the present price of gas coal was 22 per cent, above the average price of last year, and the class of coal now being supplied at the gasworks had reduced the make of gas per ton by .about 8 per cent. It was estimated thatifrom these causes the cost of coal for the ensuing year would be increased by £486. Pipes, meters, etc., had increased by over 30 per cent. Owing to these causes the committee reluctantly recommended that the price of gas should be increased by Id per 100 cubic feet from April 1, making the net price to consumers 6/8 per 1000 cubic feet. After some discussion and a strenuous protest from Cr C. E. Johnston, a motion for the adoption of the report was carried.
