WOOLSTON BOROUGH.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Woolston Borough Council met last night, those present being, the Mayor (Mr J. J. Graham) and Crs D. Meßae, C. Hill, G. Lilley, F- Newton, L. Hart, J. B. Richardson, J. C. Hobson and T. E. Radcliffe. The Electricity Committee recommened that the lamps near Richardson Monument be re-arranged. The transformers were in port, but the switch-gear had not. yet arrived. The report was adopted. The Works Committee reported that the foreman had been instructed to keep the Tilford Street Bridge in repair until next year's estimates were made out. The report was adopted. The Finance Committee reported that the General Account showed a credit balance of £807; the Electricity Loan Account a debit of £?>.'!.'!, and the Temporary Loan Account a debit of £9OO. The Committee recommended that those ratepayers who had promised to pay rates by a specified date be not taxed with the extra 10 per cent., providing promises were kept. It was recommended that the Drainage Board be informed that the amount of rates collected —£K!8 17/9—would be forwarded without delay. The committee's recommendations were approved. Accounts amounting to £576 12/- were passed for payment. The chairman presented a statement showing the rates struck by the Domains Board. This board, he said, was now on a better financial footing than it was previously. The statement was received and approved. The commissioners of the Tramway Board Sinking Fund wrote to say that the council's application regarding the taking up of the Chichester Street .Special Loan debentures had not been entertained. Dr Chesson, District Health Officer, gave the.council notice that the nuisance caused by the Barton Street drain must, be a+ated. The Mayor said that a very difficult proposition had arisen in connection with this open drain, as little water ran into it, with the result that any dirty water that <Jid enter it became stagnant, and created a nuisance. It. was suggested that this water be diverted to the drain at the other side of the street, and the offensive open drain be filled up. It was decided to forward this suggestion to the foreman, and that Dr Chesson be informed accordingly. The request of the Technical College Board of Governors for a continuance of the council's contribution was referred to the Finance Committee. With regard to the complaints made concerning the Woolston Baths, the secretary of the Woolston School wrote to say that inquiries had been made, and no grounds found for complaint. The letter was received without comment. The suggestion of Mr Frank Thompson that the surface of the Heathcote Bridge be covered with tar macadam was referred to the Works Committee. The request of the Government Electricity Engineer (Mr L. Bilks) that the sum of £;!15 5/6, due for work carried out for the council during the past month, be paid, was referred to the Electricity Committ.ee. The Drainage Board intimated that a deputation, representing the City, Woolston and Heathcote Councils, regarding floodgates at the outfall drain would be received on Tuesday, 20th inst. It was decided to inform the other bodies concerned, aud that the council be represented.
