Inspector Chappell has been in the service of the board for three years. During his absence Mr C. W. Aborn will attend to his duties. Lady members of the St. (.'lair Surfing and . Life-saving Club on Tuesday farewelled Mrs T. 11. Elmes, who has been secretary of the ladies' branch of the (dub, ami presented her with a souvenir, in acknowledgment of her honorary services. Mrs Elmes is leaving for Christchurch, her husband having resumed his business in this city. A presentation was made hist evening, at the annual meeting of the Christchurch Golf Club, to the retiring hon. secretary, Mr L. V r . Comerford. The j club captain, Mr M. 11. Godby, on behalf of the members of the committee, I referred to the valuable work done for the club by Mr Comerford, and expressed regret at his being unable to hold oliico during the coming year. Mr Jonah Harris, who died at Ngaio on Pcbiuary 23, was born in England in 18-10, and arrived in Wellington in the sailing ship Clifton in 1841. In 1804 he accepted a position in the late W. L. Hirst's tannery at Kaiwarra, and subsequently entered into partnership with. Mr ."John Holmes, of Ngaio, taking over the Kaiwarra Tannery, and trading under the name of Hirst and Co. until the y<Jar 1913, when the business was formed into a limited liability company, the late Mr Harris being one of the first directors.

It was announced by the Commonwealth Minister of the Navy (Mr .Jensen) last week that, acting on the recommendation of the British Admiralty, Captain Henry L. Cochrane, R.N., had been appointed to succeed Commodore Gordon Smith as second naval member of the Commonwealth Naval Board. Captain Cochrane is spoken of as a particularly able officer, with considerable administrative experience. Prior to his present, appointment he Mas acting as Assistant Director of Naval Equipment at the Admiralty, lie is now on his way out to Australia.

A cable message was received in Sydney on February Hi from the War Office that 2nd-Licut. George Fortosque Perston,' R.F.A., only son of Mr N. M. F. I'ctnton, of the Bank of New Zealand, Sydney, nephew of Mr A. R. Perston, of Wellington, and grandson of the late W. Robertson Perston, who was for many years manager of the Bank of New South Wales in Wellington, Wanganui, and Dunedin, was killed in action in the Balkans on February 11!. The deceased officer, who was 30 years of aye, was born at Dunedin, and was educated at the Wnitaki- High S.diool and at Nelson College, and at, a later stage joined the staff of the Bank of New Zealand in Nelson, subsequently taking to {aiming in the Auckland district. He. left New Zealand in November, 1915, for England, where he obtained his commission in the Royal Field Artillery soon after his arrival there. After some months' training he was sent to Salonica.
