GERMANY FACED WITH SPECTRE OF FAMINE.
INVADES WALLACHIA TO GET GRAIN. OTHER EUROPEAN FRONTS WEAKENED. By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received December 11, 8.55 a.m.) PETROGRAD, December 10. The Nord und Sud Agency states that the defence of Wallachia, from the outset, was deemed of secondary importance, while that of Moldavia was regarded as absolutely essential. The Germans did not succeed in piercing the Moldavian front, despite repeated efforts. The occupation of the agricultural districts oi Wallachia affords the Germans a hope of struggling on for some time longer with famine, whose spectre is driving Germany to desire immediate peace. The German Command, in order to obtain even that brief respite, concentrated forces on the Balkan front, to the detriment of other European fronts, thus sacrificing strategic considerations tc the necessity for revictualling.
