In reply to an invitation, his Excellency Lord Liverpool has consented to present the prizes at the. end* of the year function of the Boys' High School, to be held to-morrow evening, at 7.30, in the Canterbury College Hall. Her Excellency Lady Liverpool has also consented to act in a similar capacity at the breaking-up social of the Girls' High School. This will be held in the Choral Hall on Thursday evening, at 7.30 p.m. Mr E. R. Good, of Rangiora, has resigned his appointment as a Justice of the Peace.

The Minister of Lands, the Hon. Sir Francis Bell, arrived on Saturday morning from Wellington. On Saturday evening the president of the Canterbury WoolbrDkers' Association, Mr A. Boyle, v/ent north.

The chairman of the Union Steam Ship Company, Sir James Mills, arrived in town yesterday from Wellington. Messrs P. J. Bryan (Napier), A. Martin (Dunedin), and P. L. Foote (Westport) are among the guests at Warner's Hotel.

Lieutenant F. L. Murray ("Les") leaves shortly in command of the 20th Reinforcement of Mounted Rifles. For many years he was connected with cricket and football in Christchurch, and saw active service with the 3rd Contingent in the Boer War. The Rev. S. Lawry, of Christchurch, has received advice that his son, Lieut. R. A. R. Lawry, has been promoted to captain, the advance to date from March last. Captain Lawry, who had been twice wounded at the front, is on duty at Sling Camp, where he is officer in charge of kit stores. A gathering organised by the Styx Gun Club to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Buckley was held in the Masonic Ball, Papanui, on Friday evening. Mr and Mrs Buckley, who have sold their farm and are removing to a larger one, received several presentations on behalf of the residents, the Gun Club, and the Sports Committee. Mr C. H. Drew, late of New Plymouth, and now at the Denham Officers' Training Camp, has secured his Hying certificate, and has been given a commission in the Royal Flying Corps. He will soon proceed to Oxford, where he will study the mechanism of aeroplanes. With his corps he expects to go to France in February or March. Mr .Fames Henry Stone, an old resident of the Methven district, died at liis residence on Friday morning. Tlis death was not altogether unexpected, as he had been for many years more or less an invalid. Mr ami Mrs Stone had been ,'!(> years in the district, during which time Mr Stone carried on the business of general storekeeper. The deceased leaves a widow and eight; children,'four sons and four daughters. Mr J. 11. Stone, the eldest, son and manager of the business, is well known as the secretary of the Methven Racing Club, the Methven Saleyards Company, and the Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The other three sons are all residents of the district, with the exception of Mr Arthur Stone, who is at the war. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon at Methven, the service being conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon Ensor, of Christehureh.

Visitors to the United Service Hotel include Messrs E. Short (Feilding), H. Gillies (Palmerston North), H. Blackman (Wellington), J. Blakeley (Dunedin). Mr John Lawson, who was at one time Traffic Manager of the South Island Railways, and later Commissioner of Railways, died in Auckland yester day morning. Messrs C. F. Brawn (Wellington), F. Wallis (London), W. T. Lovelock (Palmerston North), C. C. Roberts (Ashburton), W. Leitch (Blackball) are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. In company with Colonel R. A. Chaffey, Officer Commanding the Canterbury Military District, the Hon. J. Allen, who arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning, set out on a motor journey to Hanmer Springs to inspect the Soldiers' Hospital. Mr G. T. Murray, who lias been in temporary charge "of the district, has been appointed to fill the position of district engineer to the Public Works Department in Auckland, which recently became vacant through the retirement of Mr F. Bigg-Wither on superannuation.
