THE CALL TO SERVICE.
TWENTY-FOURTH REINFORCEMENT. THE ALTERATION OF DATES. When it was announced, quite recently, that the 24th Reinforcement would be mobilised in the first week in January, instead of on the dates originally scheduled—that for the j Christchurch area group's draft be- ' ing December 13—there was some ' grumbling from men who had arranged their affairs to enable them to go into camp on the original dates. The alteration of dates left some of them with the prospect of being idle for several weeks, and, on the face of things, there were some cases of genuine hardship in the making. The ' Citizens' Defence Corps therefore I placed the position of these men bcj fore the Minister of Defence. j In a telegraphed reply to the CitiI zens' Defence Corps's representaI tions, the Hon. J. Allen has stated ; that the Defence Department will 11 take all voluntary men who wish to 'iconic into camp on December 13. : "If the men elect to remain until after the New Year," adds the Minister, "no pay will be given them, the understanding being that they are granted leave without pay." In accordance with this notification, Captain J. A. Northc.ote, commander of the Christchurch area group, will arrange to send into camp on December 13 men who have voluntarily enlisted for the Christchurch quota, if the men desire it. The men who wish to leave for camp next Wednesday should report at the area group recruiting office as soon as possible. No names, however, will be received after noon on Wednesday, as the roll must be compiled and the necessary travelling warrants and other papers prepared before the men leave Christchurch. MILITARY SERVICE BOARD. • The Military Service Board for the Canterbury district will sit in Christchurch on Tuesday, December 19, and the following day. A number of the appeals from men who were drawn in the ballot will be heard then. MEDICAL BOARD.
