NORWEGIAN LOSSES. Renter's Telegrams. CHRISTIANIA, December 5. Two hundred and forty-two Norwegian ships have been sunk during the war, and of these 93 have gone during the last six months.

Australian and N.Z. Cabin Association. WASHINGTON, December 5. Germany has sent a preliminary reply to the American Note concerning the sinking of the Arabia, claiming that the Arabia was a transport. American officials do not expect a serious crisis, but anticipate a controversy regarding the character of the vessel.
CABLE STATION SHELLED.
ON MADEIRA ISLAND. Seuler's Telegrams. NEW YORK, December 5. A private cable states that a submarine attacked the Portuguese port of Funchal in the Island of Madeira, and shelled the cable office, doing damage to the extent of several thousand pounds to business houses. There were no casualties.
