SPREYDON BOROUGH.

COUNCIL MEETING. The Spreydon Borough Council met last, evening, when the Mayor (Mr W. 11. Wiusor) presided. There were also preseut: Crs A. Manhire, R. IT. Tavlor, E. Haves, W. .1. Elliott, 0. 11. The Mayor reported that the balance of the wire needed to complete the reticulation of the borough had left Eng- : laud, and was now on the way. The: Works Committee reported that' the work of street grading had been continued sim-e the last meeting, and general work had been done. It recommended to the council the desirability of* passing a resolution asking the Government to cancel the necessity of compiling district electors' lists for the coming election, thus saving a great ' expense to the country. It considered | that the last printed rolls with a > typewritten supplement would be quite adequate for the purpose. The committee also was of opinion that it would be desirable to pass the resolution on , to other local bodies, asking them to co- . operate in the matter.

After discussion on the recommendation regarding the printing of rolls, in which it was stated that the present cost to Spreydon for printing in connection with the matter was £6O, the report was agreed to.

THE COST OF LIVING. The Finance Committee reported that in the matter of the question of the cost of living, which had been submitted to it for a report, it had decided to hold the matter over. It desired that in the interim tiie Minister of Internal Affairs should be communicated with, ashing what power was likely to be given to borough councils regarding the control of outside competition, and also if money could be raised without a poll for the purpose of starting either of the businesses mentioned in the Cost of Living Act, 1915. Cr Mauhirc said that the Finance Committee had almost decided to recommend the establishment of a borough bakery, but desired to collect as much information as possible on the matter first. He moved the adoption of the report. FINANCE.

The financial statement showed receipts since the last meeting to have been £132 13/5. Accounts were:—District fund account, £556 3/9; pit account, £55; and electricity account, £sl 4/9. Bank balances were in credit as follow: Loan interest, 13/10; pit, £l3l 12/8; and electric light account, £203 12/8. Temporary loans were £259; accounts to pay, £56 3/9; and the bank balance district fund account, £225 13/3.
