SOUTHBRIDGE.
The committee set up to carry through the recent complimentary social to Colonel the Hob. E. Heaton Rhodes, tit Leeston, met last week to receive a statement of accounts. It had been agreed, before the social took place, that any surplus, after paying for the present given to Miss Birdling and meeting small expenses in connection with the gathering, should he handed over for Red Cross purposes. The lneetingaceordingly decided to vote £1 to each of the nine Bed Cross branches in the district.
The fortnightly Red Cross social, held at Killinehy, was, as usual, well attended. The euchre prize winners were:— Ladies, Miss L. l.emou 1, Miss Bessie Chappell consolation; gentlemen, Mr Arthur Smith 1, Mr G. Tigers consolation. During the evening a hand-carv-ed glove-box, presented by Miss L. Lemon, was auctioned, and realised £4 10/-.
Mr Stanley, who has liecn telegraphist at the Snuthbridge Station for some months, left on transfer for Timaru on Saturday. While at Sonthbridgc he made himself very popular with the general public by his courtesy and obliging manner in the oftiee and by his outside activities.
