RAILWAY EMPLOYEES' SICK BENEFIT SOCIETY.
This society held its 39th annual | meeting in the Oddfellows' Hall, Selwyn Street, on November 29. Mr B. E. Estall presided over a large attendance of members. The committee's report stated that the year commenced with 290 members. ' During the year 14 had joined, 25 had ' left to go and serve their country, 18 ! had left the service, three transferred, ' three accepted on transfer, two had '■ died, three superannuated, leaving' a membership of 257. The year had been one of the heaviest in respect of sick- • ness, and the largest death roll in the history of the society, £163 1/- was paid I out in funeral allowance, and 12:; members had received assistance in sick '• pay, in periods ranging up to .12 months. : The balance-sheet showed the receipts to lie A 707 7/8, expenditure £695 1/4, ' leaving a balance of £72 C)/4, which was I divided as follows: —2/(5 per member, £32 2/(i as a reserve fund, and £4O 3/10 s to be declared as a dividend of 3/3 a < member. i The following officers were elected for > the ensuing year:—President, Mr .). i Scott; vice-president, Mr A. Mitchell, McKay, G. Ilaxell, and J. Mc- ; George. ' Sympathy was expressed with Mr J. Scott, the newly-elected president, and Mr A. Johnson, the retiring treasurer, and oilier members, who had been laid aside with sickness. During the evening a gold medallion was presented to Mr IS. E. Estall, the retiring president. It was decided to present Mr A. Johnson, the retiring treasurer, and Mr F. ('. Smith, who had been an energetic worker for the society for many years, with the society's badge, as a mark of esteem from the members.
