A GALLANT OFFICER.
LIEUT.-COLONEL FREYBERG. THE HERO OF BEAUCOURT. Australiati and N.Z. Coble Axsociation. LONDON, November 25. Lieutenant-Colonel B. C. Freyberg, late of Wellington, is lying seriously ill from four wounds in hospital. He won the Distinguished Service Order at the Dardanelles for swimming some distance before lighting flares with which to draw the Turks' fire. All the war correspondents eulogise his heroism, and one declares that there has seldom been a case where success was so clearly due to one man's personality. The "Morning Post's" correspondent pictures the strange figure wrapped in soiled bandages leading his men over the worst obstacles. Another declares that every man in the Naval Division is proud of him, and his fame is spreading throughout the Army. United Service. LONDON, November 25. Lieutenant-Colonel Freyberg was the hero of the Naval Division at Beaucourt. He was an ex-New Zealand athlete, and a long-distance swimming champion. He had a varied and adventurous career He had fought in Mexico and joined the West Surrey Regiment at the beginning of the war. He was al Antwerp and at Gallipoli.
