NOTES AND NEWS. From Our Own Correspondent. A meeting of the Belgium Relief Committee was held on Saturday, Mr H. F. Nicoll presiding. There were also present Messrs T. Doig and W. Harding. The chairman reported that the cash in hand amounted to £l5O 12/6, and £350 on fixed deposit, making a credit balance of £SOO, with no liabilities. The chairman explained that he had called the meeting with a view to raising money for a Christmas offering to the suffering Belgian children. A recent cable had stated that many were dying through insufficient food. It was decided to call a public meeting on Saturday next at 3 p.m.! in the A. and P. rooms. j A letter from the Shakespearean Club stated that it was giving a reading of the "Merchant of Venice,") and that the proceeds would go to the Belgium Fund. | The committee thanked the club for its proposed assistance. The sale of the lamb, presented by Miss Kane for the benefit of the Bed Cross Funds, has been postponed un- j til Tuesday, when it wiii be sold at the saleyards. The Hampstead School picnic will: be held on November 30. A large attendance is expected. The Plunket Society wishes to thank all donors of garments for distribution among the wives and widows of British soldiers and sailors. The Rev. Val. Trigge is in Ashburton, and will hold a 10 days' mission at the Baring Square Church. At the weekly stock and produce sales on Saturday there was a fair (\ntry of poultry and produce, and a large entry of pigs. The following prices obtained:— l Poultry.—Hens, 2/6, 3/-, 3/5 to 4/2; roosters, 2/3. Pigs.—Baconers, £3, £3 12/6, £4 £4 8/-, to £5; porkers, 40/- to 53/-; stores, 26/- to 38/6; weaners, 20/- to 25/-. . Calves.—3/-, 6/- to 16/-. Produce.—Potatoes (table), 12/- to 17/- per sack; seed do, 6/- to 10/- per sack; pig do., 1/9 per sack; wheat, 14/- per sack; small onions, 3d to 4d per bundle; rhubarb, 6d per bundle; lettuce, Id each. Mrs Hansen, of Hinds, has received cable advice that her son, Private C. Gordon Hansen, is in the First London Hospital, wounded in the left shoulder, and is progressing favourably.
