DANISH SMUGGLERS.
HEAVY FINES IMPOSED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. COPENHAGEN, November 17. In the last seven months tines amounting to £300,000 sterling have been imposed by Denmark upon smugglers. Many heavy terms of imprisonment have recently been inflicted. Fines as high as £30,009 sterling for a single offence have been imposed. Yet such penalties fail to deter the offenders. Many of the smugglers are Germans, but some are Danes working for international organisations. A large German Copenhagen merchant was convicted of smuggling 60,0001b of rubber in sealed herring tins. It is believed that Germany pays the fines.
