It is understood that each side made counter proposals, which were i not accepted. < Finally Mr Hughes temporarily adjourned the conference to allow 'consideration of the Government's proposals that the men resume on i Monday, and that their case be con- [ sidered the same day by the Arbitrai tion Court or a special tribunal. ■THE GOVERNMENT'S PROPOSAL BALLOT TO BE TAKEN. j MELBOURNE, November 17. A conference of miners' representatives decided to call meetings in all districts on Monday to take a bal- . j lot upon the question of an immedilate resumption of work in accordance with Mr Hughes's proposal. If it is accepted work will be resumed on Wednesday or Thursday. SYDNEY LIGHTING. BILL THROUGH PARLIAMENT. SYDNEY, November 17. The Gas and Electric Lighting i Restriction Bill was passed by both ! Houses. I LIGHTING RESTRICTIONS. A PERIOD OF GRACE. SYDNEY, November 17. The new Lighting Act operated for ;a short time to-day, when candles iwere requisitioned for interior lighting, but a meeting of the newly- ! appointed Light and Power Board 'decided to give the city twenty-four ! hours' grace. It is now proposed to cut off all power from midnight on Sunday, land private lighting, including that jof theatres and private houses, at I midnight on Monday. The penalty i provided for contravention of the j order is £SOO fine. LITHGOW MINERS. DETERMINED TO WIN. J (Received November 18, 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, November 18. A mass meeting of Lithgow miners j unanimously resolved to light for : eight hours bank-to-bank. The miners do not intend to return ! to work until this has been granted.
