The various ingenious devices and deceptions resorted to by animals and birds in order to distract human attention from their young and from their nests have formed the subject of many strange and, at times, incredible stories, but the latest deception practised by a St. Albaus bantam was both unusual and successful. Her owner had missed her much of late, and was forced to the suspicion that she was busied in the occupation of hatching. All attempts to locate the nest were unsuccessful. One day, however, when ppising a fir tree he heard a lot of chirruping overhead, and lie found that the plucky hen had hatched out her young in an aerial nest. The bantam had shaped a sort of rough nest in an accumulation of pine needles which had fallen into a narrow fork, about Bft from the ground. In this slio had laid nine eggs, seven of which had been successfully hatched. She now struts about the yard with her brood of seven arboreal youngsters, obviously proud of her unusual achievement.
