LINWOOD TRAM SHELTER

SQUARE BEAUTIFYING SCHEME. CITY COUNCIL APPROVAL WANTED. The question of the erection of a tramway shelter in Cathedral Square for Lin wood passengers, which had been held in abeyance pending an agreement on the proposals of the Beautifying Association, was the subject of a letter received at yesterday's meeting of the Tramways Board from the Linwood Citizens* Association. it asked that if the general alterations for the beautifying of Cathedral Square were not proceeded with before the winter, would the board immediately erect a shelter for Linwood passengers.

Mr Flesher moved that as soon as the City Council's consent was forthcoming the work for the Linwood shelter should be put in hand.

Mr Sykes said that as in any case the Linwood shelter was an integral part of all the schemes submitted, the board might just as well proceed with the erection of this building staightaway without obtaining the council's approval.

Mr A. S. Taylor retorted that as the various schemes were in abeyance, it was not possible yet to say where the shelter was to be built. The motion was carried. The matter was again brought up later, when Mr Pearce stated that whatever the ultimate reconstruction of the tramway system in the Square, the work would undoubtedly take several years, whilst meanwhile Linwood residents were suffering inconvenience. He therefore moved:— "That the City Council be asked to approve of one of the plans and of a site for a shelter on the south side of the Cathedral." The motion was seconded by Mr Flesher, who said that whatever scheme was agreed on, trallic would always pass that side of the Cathedral.'

Mr Sykcs said he would like to go further, and ask the City Council to submit an alternative plan for a Linwood shelter if it was not prepared to accept those sent in by the board. The motion was carried.
