THE WAR LOAN.

MEETING AT LYTTELTON. A meeting of employers was held at the Borough Council Chambers, Lyttelton, yesterday afternoon to consider the question of encouraging employees to subscribe to the war loan by means of certificates. The Mayor (Mr W. RadclifTc who presided, said that Lyttelton offered excellent opportunities for the fostering of the scheme, and the council employees were going to take the matter up, the Minister of Finance having stated his intention to amend the present law to enable public bodies to advance money to investors. Mr J. J. O’Gorman urged the employers to assist their employees to invest in the loan. Representatives of the Shaw Savill and Albion Company, Forbes and Co., Anderson’s, Ltd., and Norton and Co. stated that their respective firms were in favour of the scheme and were providing for their men to invest. Mr J. Garrard (Kinsey and Co., Ltd.), said that the scheme afforded an excellent means of encouraging thrift. He maintained that it was easy enough to deal with the permanent hands, but the difficulty lay in reaching the casual workers. The speaker thought that the Government should assume the position of the employers, and facilitate matters for the casual men to invest in the loan. They could pay back in small weekly payments, of about 6d per week. He felt sure the scheme would be taken up by the various unions if placed on a satisfactory basis. It was decided on the motion of Mr J. Garrard, to urge upon the citizens the necessity of subscribing to the loan. A LARGE SUBSCRIPTION. The firm of Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., has taken up £20,000 of the war loan.
