ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
HEART DISEASE. Press Association. HASTINGS, May 8. Miss Margaret Swan, 67, formerly a well-known Auckland vocalist, was
found dead on Saturday night, at the residence of her brother-in-law, Mr Donald Banks, solicitor. The cause of death was heart disease. CROSSING FATALITY. MAETON, May 7. George Fyfe Bishop, a well-known solicitor and secretary of the Rangitikei Hunt Club, who is about 50 years of age, and married, whilst walking down Wellington Road on Saturday i evening, was struck by a goods train.. He was kill instantaneously. This crossing was the scene of two previous casualties, and also where Mr W. Broad was killed whilst riding a motor-cycle. RAILWAY PORTER INJURED. A porter at the Ashburton Railway Station, named W. McLauehlan, had a narrow escape from a serious accident shortly before 2 o 'clock on Saturday afternoon. He was engaged in closing the gates on the last carriage of the south express, when his foot slipped, leaving him hanging. He was'assisted to the platform of the carriage, but on alighting at the Havelock Street crossing at the south end of the platform he fell heavily to the road, badly injuring his shoulder. He was removed to the county hospital, where he recovered consciousness. He is severely bruised about the head and body, but no bones are broken, and he is likely to recover without any serious after consequences.
