COUNTY COUNCILS.

WAIPARA. The monthly meeting was held at Waikari on Friday, there being present: C.ra Geo. Rutherford (in the chair), 11. 11. Holland, N. D. Campbell, T. E. L. Roberts, and R. Evans. Correspondence was received from Mr Macgillivray, stating that his Scottish concert party would be again prepared to assist the Patriotic Committee when required. The Hon. R. McNab wrote, stating i that the council's request for a monthi ly sitting of the court at Waikari could ) not be complied with. j Mrs Overton asked for repairs to be i carried out to a cutting on the road leading to her property. It was resolvled that the matter be attended to at I once. Mr W. F. Pannett wrote asking for repairs to the road near his homestead. It was resolved, owing to the trouble in procuring labour, to ask Mr Faimett to carry out the necessary work himself, and charge it to the council. Mr A. Hndccke drew the attention of the council to the condition of the road leading to the, Lower Iliirunui bridge. It was decided to refer the matter to the Cheviot County Council. j The chairman reported that Mr Hadecke j (the contractor for the Lower Hurunui I bridge) intended starting work in a few days. In regard to the Belgium Fund, the following -resolution was carried unanimously:—"Seeing that the Central Committee is not allowing the voluntary contributions to be subsidised by the Government, this council pays no further monthly quota." It was resolved unanimously: —"That the foremen and men receive an advance of 1/- per day as a war bonus while the war lasts.'' The clerk reported that the lime pit had again been opened, several quantities having been sent away. It. was decided that the bagging of a quantity be gone on with, so as to facilitate the supplying of orders. Accounts amounting to £217 17/7 were passed for payment. OXFORD. The Oxford County Council met on, the 2nd inst., there being present:—Mr J. Wells (chairman), Messrs Alex. Bax- ' ter, H. Campbell, J. Cross, L\ Hawke, E. W. Meyer, and J. McCormack. The surveyor suggested the removal ■ of willows from the main drain, which; was adopted. In regard to drainage in the township, it was resolved to serve j notices on owners to clear the creek through R.Ss. 1839, 1890, 1941, 1952, and | 1947, also to reopen the bank pit and! clear the broom. Mr Campbell gave notice of motion to strike rates at the next meeting. It was resolved to call for tenders to j clear gorse on the Eyre main water race, also to pipe a culvert on Per- i ham's Bush Road, to erect a swing; foot-bridge over Simpson's Ford, to i call for tenders for patching the Main | Road, and also to clean the side chan- j nris and the ditch fronting Mr Ivory's: farm. The surveyor was authorised to order j moulds for making concrete pipes for j covering water race fords. It was resolved that owners of rab- j bit infested land keeping sporting dogs | for the sole purpose of destroying rahbits, should lie allowed to register the j dogs for 2/6 each .otherwise the full fee of 10/- would be charged for such The Taieri County Council wrote re! limitation of powers to erect toll gates; on bridges, and it was resolved to sup- j port, their resolution. The last meeting of the Tawera County Council was attended by Messrs Seymour (chairman), Millikin, O'Shaughnessy, and Rutledge. The returning officer's declaration was read declaring that Mr Richard Robert Evans had been duly elected a member of the council. Correspondence was read from the Taieri County Ciuncil with a resolution:—"That the powers conferred by the Municipal Corporations Act, 190.5, witli regard to the erection of toll gates to be limited, as they have been found iuerpiitable," and 'asking the council's support in the matter. It was decided to reply that as the council had

no experieuce in toll gates, it could hardly give an opinion without hearing the other side. Messrs Millikin Bros, wrote asking if the council intended forming the road to their property at Aunavale, as they intended to build during the present year. It was decided that as there was one good road to the property the .council could not see its way clear to make another. Mr Maginniss, clerk of the Paparua County Council, wrote stating that a meeting of delegates from several counties would be held at the Christchurch City Council Chambers on Wednesday to discuss the small birds nuisance. The clerk was appointed to attend the meeting. Mr Doody interviewed the council and asked to be allowed to erect gates across the road adjoining his property. It was resolved to carry out the instructions of the Public Works Department, and defer the question of gates till after the road was properly opened. The chairman moved, and Mr O'Shaughnessy seconded, that a general rate of l|d in the £ be levied in all the ridings of the county for the current year. This was carried unanimously.
