SUMNER-REDCLIFFS. from Our Oa'n Correspondent. At the Sumner Town Hall on Saturday l;isl the Sumner Red Cross Committee made a display of the work done during the past month. (There was an excellent attendance, I and the display created considerable interest. Mrs' Walter Hill, of the Christchurch Red Cross Society, was in attendance, and in the course of |an address referred to the fact that [there were 160 branches of the Red i Cross Society in New Zealand. She I made an urgent appeal to the ladies lot' Sumner for more helpers, and staled that everything pointed to the fact that mud) more Bed Cross work would shortly be needed. The school children al!so exhibited 54 handkerchiefs, 25 | knitted face cloths, 2 pairs socks, 4 1 scarves, 10 pillow slips, 3 pairs bed socks, 11 operation cloths, 14 face ; cloths. ! The following ladies gave gifts of material:—Mrs Thorpe, Mrs Butcher, Mrs Wigffins, Mrs Parnham, Mrs I Stevens, Mrs East, Mrs van Asch, [Mrs Thornley, Mrs Ferguson, Miss Murley, and Miss Tacon. ! Afternoon tea was provided, the iamount collected being £2 14/10. The members of the Sumner Beaujlifying Association, after a long rest, are meeting on Tuesday night next, i when several matters of importance will claim their attention. The members of the Sunmer-Red-clifl's section of the C.D.C. are to narade for drill at the rifle range on "Sunday morning. II is some weeks [since the Sumner section did any 'drill, but the Redcliffs section has jturned out in good numbers each I week. Temperature.—The maximum temperature for the month was 70deg on the 7th, and the minimum 44deg on the 9lh. The maximum variation was 17deg on the 20th, and the minimum kleg on the 271b. The average maximum temperature was 62deg, | the average minimum 54deg, and i the average variation 7.7deg, which is considered very low. During the I month the temperature was very I even. Barometer.—'the readings of the | barometer were very steady. The i maximum was 30.3 inches on the 28th and the minimum 29.32 on the |day following. I The monthly meeting of the I Women's Christian Temperance ! L'nion was held in the Methodist ! Schoolroom on Thursday. The I principal business was in connection with the petition for G o'clock I closing of hotels. The sum of 307i was paid in for the Lady Liverpool i Fund, and it was decided to spend | the money upon chocolates for the \ soldiers at the front. The Band of Hope sent a donation of r.l towards | the Dominion W.C.T.L'. patriotic efi fort. At Hie monthly meeting of the Ladies' New Brighton branch of the I Red Cross Society a large parcel was dispatched to the main depot:—3ll j garments, 27 pairs of socks, 558 roller bandages, 240 swabs, 22 mani- ! tails. A large number of garments j have been made for the soldiers' ! bags, which will be sent in this month. Donations and subscriptions 'for April amount to i'lo 7/G, which ! includes contributions from the ] Anzac services held at the Anglican ! Church. j Tenders will be called next week | for the New Brighton Co-operative | Picture Theatre. The building, which will be of brick, will be dejcorated throughout in fibrous plaster, j and will have seating accommodaj tion on th ground floor for 355, and ! 100 in the circle. At the New Brghton School Committee meeting the chairman, Mr F. ! Cropp. The monthly shoot of the reserve} was held on Wednesday evening. The "Dotty Medal'' was again won by Mr A. G, Munns, with a score of I 08. The B grade button was won by Mr Hempleman. It was decided to send a team of live men to the Ash- j burton Miniature Ritle Championship meeting on June 3. On Tues- j day the Reserve fired a match against the Crown Brewery, which was a win for the latter by 17 points, j The highest scores were:— New Brighton: 11. I The Fire Brigade held a wet prac-1 tice, the object being to lest the fire sump in Nelson Street. The wells in Ceorge Street and the King Edward well were diverted into the side channels which flowed along Seaview Road into Nelson Street, and in conjunction with the well in the Council yard, kept the sump full. The result was considered very satisfactory. What is wanted now is a tire sum]) in Lonsdale Street, as there are several deep wells in that vicinity which are running to waste and would easily keep the sump full.
