LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A Dunedin telegram states that, after a fortnight's recruiting campaign in the north and south, Dr Mo-Nab is convinced that the real trouble regarding recruiting is one of lethargy. A great number of people have the idea that the final result is assured, and consider that that being *so, why worry themselves? His whole object is to state the position without exaggeration, but in the most serious vein possible. He has found that once people realise the positionlhey are quick to respond. The tone of all his meetings left nothing to be desired, and he believes that the real benefit of them will be found in keener organisation and a more spirited effort. A wounded soldier, in a letter to the Prime Minister, writes as follows about his treatment in England, says the " Dominion.' ' "I am adding this (postscript) to let you know what a splendid reception our men have received since landing in England, and how the efforts of the people of New Zealand are appreciated by all classes. Since landing I have visited a number of different places, and have everywhere been received with kindness and sympathy, everything being done to make my stay a pleasant one. I will always entertain an affectionate regard for this grand old country until the end of my life. Erom the point of view of a wounded soldier it makes me feel that my sacrifice has not been in vain when my efforts have been so well appreciated by all with whom I have come in contact. " BEACH SAGES.

Three lads, who evidently could not resist, temptation, were charged in the Juvenile Court this morning, before Mr Hi W. Bishop, S.M., with stealing strawberries, valued at 7/6, and with stealing strawberry plants valued at 1/6. There was a further charge against the young culprits of wilfully damaging strawberry plants to the value of 3/-. Senior"Sergeant Mathieson said that one lad took the plants, the other the strawberries, and the third held the gate. Two .of the lads were first - offenders, but the third had been before the court on four occasions, once for lighting and three times for theft. He was a bad boy,, and appeared to have led the others astray. Mr Bishop remarked that it was a question as to whether this boy was under proper control. The two first offending boys , were severely admonished, and the other lad was committed to the Wereroa Training Farm.

The Canterbury Automobile Association reports that the road inland to Kaikoura is now. in good order, the rivers low, and fords easy to negotiate. The coast route, via Parnassus, has lately had many miles of beach shingle laid down, and until this is rolled, motorists would be wise to use the inland route. The road from Kaikoura to Blenheim cannot at present be..used on account of the Public Works Department blasting out the, Ohau Point, 12 miles north, of Kaikoura. The department notifies, from time to time some few hours:when, the road may be used.
