CUSTOMS. * The Customs returns' at Christchurch for December 3 and 4 are as follow: — December 3.—General Customs £1096 1/4, beer duty £738 10/8, other receipts 5/-; total, £1834 17/-. ■ December: Customs £1248-3/9. The Customs officials explain that the large amount collected for beer duty is owing to the new regulation under which brewers pay on the quantity in stock instead of, as formerly, on the amount sent out from the brewery. ' TO-DAY'S EGG AND POULTRY MARKET. Messrs J.fß. Merrett "and Co. report a' large entry of poultry for their first Christmas sale, there being over 2000 birds entered. Prices were remarkably good, although hens are falling in price in conse-! quence of heavy' supplies. Table chickens are in splendid demand, one choice line realising 10/2 per pair. Most goslings require priming, and are too immature to command high prices. The egg market is firm, last week's prices being maintained.
