RED CROSS.

FIELD DAY. A field day was held at Swannanoa on Friday last in aid of the newly-estab-lished Red Cross Society, in lieu of the children's annual picnic. An excellent programme of sports and competitions was carried out, and numerous side shows were organised to raise funds. A special feature was the blowing up of "Kaiser Bill," a proceeding which caused much merriment. The secretary of the function, Mr Grant, worked untiringly, and was ably assisted by all present. A total of over £l7 was raised. tTTie various prizes wer» donated by the trading firms of the district. CITY BRANCH. The committee of this branch appeal to the people. of Chvistehurch for the funds urgently required for the initiation and carrying on of the branch. Subscriptions will be accepted in single sums,.but it is hoped that many of those interested will be prepared to give monthly amounts in order to ensure the proper carrying on of the work. The object of this fund is the supply and distribution of material free of cost to workers who are willing to,give their services. ' ■'■' ■'" ' " '

ROSE AND PEA CARNIVAL. At New Brighton a Rose and Sweet Pea Carnival, in aid of the Red Cross Funds, was opened by the Mayor (Mr J. A. Flesher). A large number -of people attended throughout the day. The awards were as follow: Roses.—Twelve varieties: H. E. Sadler 1. Champion trophy: H. Anderson 1, Mrs Lawrence 2. Six varieties: Dr Stevens 1, Mrs Lawrence 2. Three varieties: H. E. SALES DEPOT. The depot has received from Dr Levinge £7 2/-, being the result of sale of bedding-out and other plants grown by him. A donation of £5 was received from Mrs Blake, of 27 Shrewsbury Street.
