LAWN TENNIS.
AVONSIDE CLUB. Another year has slipped away since the wistaria hung its purple banners our over the porticoes of the courts, and the tennis season is with us again. - . v
This afternoon the formal opening o£. the club's courts took place. A brief address was given by the vice-president, Mr, F. J. Murray, who congratulated the members on the, standard of their play during the past season, no fewer tham N three Canterbury championships having been annexed by; the Avonside.Club. Mr Murray also made a brief reference te the Avonside Club's ;roll of honour, If - members being already at the front, while others are 1 waiting their 'turn te go. In this connection Mr> Murray drew attention to the stalls that had been tempbratily erected on ■;■ 'the f grounds, explaining that the proceeds of the sales were to go towards the Wounded Soldiers' Fund, ' The trophies won by various members of the club during the past season: were presented, after which afternbom tea was served. A charge of sixpence was. made to all entrants " for the afternoon's matches, the proceeds going towards the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. "■" ; The idea of the stalls was a successful and profitable one, the stall-holders • _ • '. doing quite a brisk trade with the visitors to the courts. The ladies presiding at the stalls were: ments, Mrs J; C. Lord j, Variety, Miss Beresford/ Flowers, Mrs Donaldson; Sweets, Miss Peck; Tobacco,-Miss Allard.
