RAKAIA BRIDGE TRAFFIC.

COMPLAINT BY SETTLERS. [From our own Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, September 2. Replying to Mr Dickie (Selwyn) regarding the petition of settlers using the Ralcaia bridge that telephonic communication be installed between the bridge and Dunsandel and Chertsey, Mr Herries states that the bridgekeepers are at present in telephonic communication with the Rakaia station, and it is the duty of the stationmaster there to keep the bridgekeepers advised of any specials or trains running late. It is considered better that all advices to bridgekeepers in. connection with trains should pass through the stationmaster at Rakaia, as that officer is in a position to make allowance for the work which he is aware has to be carried out at his own station or at Bankside, and can therefore arrive more closely at ths time up to which the bridge may be used for road traffic. In view tff this it is not considered that any practicable I benefit would be derived from tele-

phonic communication with Dun-, sandel and Chertsey. The Minister, I however gives his assurance that spe-1 cial efforts will be made to minimise the delays of which settlers complain.
