MONTHLY MEETING. A short meeting of the committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held last evening. Mr D. M'Laren presided, and the following, members., were present:— Mesdames Atkinson, Cross, and M'Fari lane, Messrs Spiller and 'Cross. ; A communication was received from the Minister of Eailways regarding complaints that dogs contracted diseases while being conveyed on the railways, to the effect that every care would be ; taken to guard against such a danger. The inspector reported that he had made enquiries into several eases of alleged cruelty to animals. He had visited | the Belfast works, and found that improvements could be effected in the I method .of slaughtering pigs, and the I manager had promised to look into the matter. It was decided to write to the secretary of the New Zealand Polo Asi sociation, asking for a copy of the rules relating to the use of spurs on polo ponies, the members being of - the ; opinion that the use of the spur should !be avoided.
