COUNTY COUNCILS.
ELLESMERE. The Ellesmere County Council met on Monday. Present: —Crs J. Storry (in the chair), J. C. Free, J. Cunningham, T. A. Stephens, F. J. Lemon, and J. Lochhead.
It was decided to instruct Messrs Dawson Bros, to proceed as soon as possible with "the shingling of Sowden's Road.
It was decided to reply to a letter frpm the Paparua County Council that the council did not favour breaking away from the New Zealand Counties' Association.' It favoured the idea of calling a conference of counties, which used to form the old Selwyn County Council. -*
It" was reported that the timber for the Taumutu and Cooper's Creek ciilVerts had been handed over to the contractor.
The superintendent and foreman of ■the ! Leeston Volunteer Fire Brigade wttited upon the council and presented a!"petition signed, by the brigade members, asking for a more up-to-date firelighting plant and improved water supply. The council also received, a petition signed by 65 ratepayers) asking for the dissolution of the Leeston fire 'prevention special rating area.—lt was decided to go into the whole matter, at a special meeting to be held in a fortnight's time. ' The following tenders were accepted:—Cleaning drain, Stephens's corner to' Buckley's Road, at 1/6 per chain; cleaning drain, Mawson's culvert to' Stephens's corner (north side), at 2/- per chain; cleaning drain, Marshall's Creek to Stephens's corner (south side), at 1/4 per chain, F. Baylis; cleaning Prosser's Road, drain, H. Smith, at 1/9 per chain; cleaning Anderson's drain, D. M'Clurej at 1/6 per chain.
