RUGBY FOOTBALL
CANTERBURY REFEREES' ASSOCIATION.
There was a good attendance at the annual meeting, last evening, of the Canterbury Rugby Referees' Association. Mr H. E. Hiddlestone presided. The president said that for the first time in its history the association was in a good financial position. One thing he wished to point out was that the association's affairs had run so smoothly because it recognised that it was subservient to the Canterbury Rugby Union, which was the governing body of Rugby football in this district. He pointed this out in view of the attitude which had been taken up by the Wellington Referees' Association, which considered that it should have a share of the control of Rugby in Wellington, and, in consequence, had been continually at loggerheads" with the Wellington Rugby Union.
It was decided to alter the Association's rules to provide for the executive consisting of seven members, instead of five as heretofore. The executive elected was as follows: President, Mr H. E. Hiddlestone; secre> tary, Mr C. W. Hervey; committee, Messrs W. Duggan, W, Harman, uT. P. Peake, G. -S. Matthews, and G. F. Gray.
It was decided that the Association's meetings should be held on the first Monday in each month. , -- The matter of appointing a proxy to represent the association at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Referees' Association, which is to be held in Wellington on. May 9, was referred to the executive. After Messrs G. H. Mason and F. T. Evans, representing the Canterbury Rugby Union, had explained to the meeting the amendments which the union had made in its competition rules, the meeting unanimously decided to referee according to the amendments. -S
The meeting approved of the sending of a team to Wellington during the season, to return the visit made last year by a football team from the Wellington Association. '
