Fears are entertained for the safety of the missionaries, especially in the event of the troops joining the brigands. [Shensi, the literal translation of which is "the western frontier," is an important province, bounded on the north by, Mongolia. Its area. is about 70,000 square miles, and the population is approximately 9,000,000.]
