PLAYING FOR TWO TITLES IN AUSTRALIA CHAMPION BEATEN Reed. Noon INfEEBOURNE, Today. The leading 16 amateurs and the leading 16 professionals who took part in the open golf championship of Australia on Saturday began match play at Oakleigh yesterday for the amateur and professional titles. The respective defenders are Ryan and Stewart. There were several surprises in the first round. D. Spence Young, the professional, beat Eyre in the open championship one up. Other wins in this section were: Howard, Stewart, Naismith, Downs, Robertson. Wood and Fowler. In the amateur division the South Australian Rymill, beat last year’s : champion Ryan two up and one. Sloan Morpeth, formerly New ZeaI land champion, was too strong for j Murrison, and won three up and one. Other winners were Nettlefold. Hat- . tersley, Adams, Russell, Apperly and Edgar.
