SAMOA LIBEL CASE

LEAVE FOR PRIVY COUNCIL APPEAL REFUSED NOT SUFFICIENT INTEREST Press Association WELLINGTON, Todaj*. Without coming to any definite conclusion as to its power to grant such leave to appeal, although it considered that it did not have the power, the Court of Appeal yesterday dismissed the application of Thomas Benjamin Slipper, barrister and solicitor, of Apia. Samoa, for leave to appeal to the Privy Council on the grounds that the case was not considered to be of sufficient general and public interest. Slipper applied for leave to appeal to the Privy Council from the Supreme Court's decision upholding the conviction against him of having published a defamatory libel.

SLIPPER ARRESTED

GAOL FOR THREE MONTHS From Our Resident Reporter WELLINGTON, Today. The Department of External Affairs yesterday received advice from Apia that. Thomas Benjamin Slipper had been arrested. This action follows the decision of the Court of Appeal, which upheld the conviction against Slipper on a charge of publishing a defamatory libel, although it quashed the charge of using abusive and insulting words to the Administrator. Slipper was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, to be served concurrently on each charge, so that the Appeal Court's decision will not lessen bis term in gaol. When his appeal was lodged he was released on bail.
