FATAL APPEALS
JOCKEY'S “COME-BACK’’ REVILES PONY CONTROL A meeting' of the Board of Manage- j raent of the Associated Racing Clubs ! (Sydney) was to have been held recently for the purpose of hearingappeals, and it is probable that the charges alleged to -have been made by the jockey W. James against the control and the conduct of the racing under the A.R.C. will be mentioned. James was suspended for six months recently after an inquiry into the running of Doris Baton, who finished unplaced at a meeting at Ascot, and upon him appealing against the decision of the stewards the board of appeal increased the term to two years. James. while still protesting innocence, is reported to have said that, jockeys have to prevent horses from doing their best in a' race to obtain a living. There are several methods by which this is done. One is to carry overweight, and doping was another. The secretary of the A.R.C. characterised the statement after studied perusal as ridiculous. He was unable to forecast the attitude of the Board of Management if the subject is mentioned. One member of the board intimated that so far as he was concerned the charges would be ignored. Bookmaker’s Action F. Robinson, of Waggn. a book- \ maker, has appealed to the Victorian Racing Club against the decision of the North-Eastern District Racing Association in connection with a bet made at the Wahgaratta meeting on March 22. A bettor claimed from Robinson .Cl 00 to £2O on Grapepicker, winner of the Wangaratta Cup. but the bookmaker contended that the bet was for Coterie. When the matter was considered by the stewards of the Wangaratta Club they ordered Robinson to pay the bettor £SO, being half the amount of the wager. Against that decision Robinson appealed to the North-Eastern District Racing Association. That association dismissed the appeal, and ordered Robinson to pay the bettor the full amount of £IOO, and in addition forfeited Robinson’s deposit of £2O. The appeal will be heard at the next meeting of the V.R.C. committee.
