WORK AMONG NEEDY

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ORPHANAGES AND MISSIONS The incorporation of the work done by Sister Esther with that of the Auckland Presbyterian Orphanages and Social Service Association has led to a great increase in efficiency in dealing with distress in the City. This has grown to such proportions that ft lias, led to the establismment of a special department, that of the Manna House, states the annual report of the association, which will be presented at at the annual meeting this afternoon. The Rev. T. Halliday, secretary, reports that both the Leslie and Oneliunga Orphanages are doing good work, matrons and staff carrying out their duties efficiently. He also praises the chaplains of the public hospital, mental hospital, infirmary, Knox Home, Veterans’ Home and Mount Eden Gaol for the good service being rendered to the Church. There are now 54 children at the Leslie Home, according to the matron, Aliss E. Horton. There are 35 girls and 19 boys. Of this number 42 attend the Aleadowbank School, where the teachers take a keen interest in their progress. There are 30 boys at the Onehunga home. TONS OF GROCERIES More than nine tons of groceries were bought from City warehouses for distribution among the poor by Sister Esther. Her mission in Picton Street distributed half a ton of apples every week among the children, as well as a quantity of fish weekly and vegetables almost every day. Alany aged people without friends or relatives are included on the mission's rolls, which shows 1,200 mothers and children and 192 aged folk to be receiving help. Of the £1,989 raised by donations during the year, £1,444 was spent in relief alone.

The association received a total of £2,460, of which £1,155 was by gift. An excess of £lO4 was noted on the year’s working, this being transferred to the capital account. The Leslie Orphanage received £2,342, of which donations made up £230.
