Mrs. M. Shillson, of Wellington, is visiting Auckland and is staying at Hotel Stonehurst. Mrs. Tt. Mossmun, ot Arney Road, ■Remuera, left last Sunday night for the South Island. Mrs. R. A. Laidlaw. of Argyle Street, Herne Bay. has returned from a visit to The Chateau, National Bark. Mr. and Mrs. H. Walker, of Whangarei. and Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Cranwell, of Hamilton, are at the Central Hotel. Mrs. R. S. Thompson, of Fairfax Road. Epsom, who has been on a visit to The Chateau, National Park, lias returned home. MOUNTAIN CRAFT GUILD THREE INTERESTING LECTURES At a meeting of the Mountain Craft Guild, organised under the auspices of the Alpine Sports Club, in the Cottage Tea Rooms on Wednesday evening, three very interesting lectures were giiven. The chairman, Mr. J. H. Rose, presided. Mr. W. Laird Thomson, who illustrated his address with photographs taken on Mount Egmont and the Tongariro National Park mountains, gave a description of some of the principal features of snow and ice craft. In warning his hearers of the dangers attending mountain-climbing of any kind. Mr. Thomson said the chief characteristic of the sound mountaineer was always caution. He concluded his address by outlining the methods of climbing in snow, and dealt extensively with the difficulties that arose in that type of mountain climbing. In his lecture, Mr. N. IT. Good spoke of the various methods of using the camera for taking photographs when climbing. He emphasised the fact that the virtue was in the photographer, and pot in- the camera, and that considerable care and thought had to be exercised in taking photographs. An interesting description of the ascent of the Minarets, one of the peaks in the main divide of the Southern Alps, overlooking the upper portion of the Tasman Glacier, and about 27 miles from the Hermitage, was given by Professor R. M. Algie, who illustrated his address with lantern slides AN ENGAGEMENT The engagement Is announced ot Eileen, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Conway, Minnehaha Avenue.
