MOTION OF THANKS PASSED j CONGRATULATION WITHHELD Press Association WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The question whether the Minister of Education, the Hon. H. Atmore, and the committee which recently inquired into the education system should be congratulated upon the proposals submitted to Parliament, was discussed at length at the conference of the Technical Education Association today. In the end it was decided to pass a resolution expressing thanks only. A proposal that congratulations should be tendered upon the complete and comprehensive nature of the report to Parliament was submitted by Mr. J. Hutton (Greymouth), who said they would recognise the excellent intentions in the report. Mr. G. J. Park (Auckland) seconded the motion. Mr. W. F. Durward (Palmerston North) expressed the hope that the report would not go through. He said: “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hand is the hand of Esau.” Mr. E. M. Andrews (Christchurch) suggested tliat the remit should use the word “thoughtful.” | Air. H. S. W. King (Auckland) said I it would mislead the public if the con--1 lerence were to congratulate the conimitteo upon the report before it had • been considered by the conference. “Air. Andrews suggests saying ‘thoughtful,’ ” said Air. King, “but I would rather say ‘laborious.’ That does not convey any compliment.” Other delegates said they thought they should be content with expressing thanks lor the report. Air. King moved an amendment that the Minister and committee bo thankedlor the comprehensive nature of the report, with some parts of which the conference would probably find itself in agreement. “I will not mince my words,” he said. “We have quite enough camouflage in the report. We do not want camouflage here, but we want to be courteous.
