SOCIETY OF ARTS

FINANCES SHOW IMPROVEMENT SUCCESS OF EXHIBITION The financial position of the Auckland Society of Arts, as disclosed in the annual report and balance-sheet, shows a decided improvement. The annual report states that the property fund, after transferring £420 to the general account, has increased from £9,G15 to £9,763. The total surplus of assets over liabilities has increased from £9,720 to £10,089. The honorary membership is 215, an increase of five over last year. Working members’ life subscriptions show a slight decrease. Although there was an actual loss of £6B on the annual exhibition, the public interest was greater and more encouraging. The sales realised £363. compared with £3BB last year, but more pictures were sold this year. The society’s declared custom of maintaining a high standard of work was much appreciated and justified itself. The Sketch Club has been well patronised and visiting artists have addressed members on various phases of art. The question of .a new home for the society is still in abeyance, but the council of the society believes that the policy of co-operation with the city council will eventually be the solution of a difficult question. In the meantime, the society’s needs are being provided for in rooms in the Victoria Arcade. The looms are open on Friday nights to members and their friends lor informal talks. The annual meeting will be held on September 25. A president and vicepresidents will be elected and four of the retiring council members, Airs. E. J. Spicer and Alessrs. Gerald Jones, H. L. Alassey and R. O. Gross, offer themselves for re-election.
