HOSPITAL AUXILIARY

GOOD YEAR REPORTED ACTIVE JUNIOR BRANCH . -j 1 A satisfactory year was reported by the committees of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary at its annual general meeting in the new rooms in Hart’s Buildings yesterday afternon. Mrs. 1 A. I). Campbell, the Mayoress, presided. The excess of revenue over expenditure for the year was £lßl 16s 7d, , and the balance sheets of the branches j were also favourable. - Notwithstanding the general depression and financial stringency, the auxiliary had managed well during the past year : owing to the efforts of the convenors and members of the committees. Special mention was made by Mrs. Campbell of the valuable aid given ; by kindred societies, and a vote of thanks was passed for their services. The Ortehunga branch reported active work among the patients of the infirmary. Concerts had been given, sew- j ing parties had attended the institu- j tion. and books and magazines had been freely distributed. A library of 130 bound books had been given to the T.B. shelters during the year, and I many o Tiers had been added since. ; The shelters had all been rewired, j . Two spinal chairs, six easy chairs for 1 the cottage, and 12 Morris chairs for the back wards, had been given to the infirmary during the year. JUNIOR BRANCH The formation of a junior branch of the auxiliary had already justified such a step. Since February, this ; body had made 135 articles for children and needy mothers at St. Helens i Hospital, and at Christmas-time 565 ' articles had been distributed among ' the children at the Auckland Hospital. ; The' Girl Guides and Boy Scouts had ! also assisted in this work. The distribution from the depot for the year totalled 5,306 garments, and donations exclusive of those received from the commercial travellers’ drive. Many orders lor foodstuffs and coal had also been issued from the depot. The sewing circle had contributed 918 garments lor the year. The membership of this group had grown from 24 to 47. The motor transport committee had conveyed 213 people to their homes from the hospital or the convalescent home. Transport had also been provided in wet weather in urgent cases for patients attending the hospital for treatment. Every week during the year members of the motor excursion committee had attended the hospital to take convalescent patients for drives. Thanks were expressed for the work done by the patroness, Mrs. A. D. Campbell, in her successful organisation of the annual street collection, and to Mr. Hart for providing the auxiliary with a room in his building, where meetings had been held since March. CARD AFTERNOON FUNDS FOR TAKAPUNA ANGLICAN CHURCH In aid of the Takapuna Church of j England funds a bridge afternoon was ! held at the home of Mrs. W. Blomfieid, i Lake Road, Takapuna, Tuesday. Bowls of Iceland poppies, jonquils i and violets decorated the rooms. The prizes, which were donated by Mrs. A. Brett, were won by Mrs. Rav and Mrs. Steele. ' I THAMES GIRLS’ CLUB MUSICAL AFTERNOON A very enjoyable monthly meeting • of the Thames Girls’ Club, which took the form an an afternoon, was held in the Druids’ ITall, Newton, on Tuesday. The president, Mrs. P. McGregor, was in the chair, and extended a cordial welcome to everyone. A very enjoyable musical programme was contributed by Mrs. George, Mrs. Snowling, Mrs. Wright, Miss Surman, Miss McGregor, and 1 Miss Miller. A very interesting address • was given by Mrs. P. McGregor. DAFFODIL DAY AT M A NUREWA CHURCHES COMBINE The Manurewa Public Hall presented an animated appearance yesterday afternoon and evening when the Ladies’ Guilds of the Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist Churches combined in a very successful effort to raise funds for Daffodil Day. I Prettily decorated stalls, arranged round the hall, were laden with goods both useful and ornamental, and record business was the general report at the close of the evening session. l Mrs. Coxhead, president of the daffol dil committee, who was accompanied on the platform by Mrs. R. Forbes, L secretary, and Mrs. Middleton, ■ treasurer, extended a cordial welcome > to the large gathering and called on Mrs. J. A. Bradstreet to officially de- • clare the function open. i , Befor © declaring the bazaar open Mrs. Bradstreet congratulated the i organisers on tlie aspect, scope and r organisation of their effort. It was [ most gratifying to find the element of . unusual interest, in the unity of their L work .and aim. Where the workers of l three churches unite it is indeed a , happy state of things. In declaring - the function open. Mrs. Bradstreet wished the workers success in everv way, financially and socially. She was then presented with*a beautiful bouquet by little Helen Sexton.
